Darre Van Dijk From TBWA Amsterdam: Kill Boring!

Darre Van Dijk, Chief Creative Officer of TBWA/Neboko in Amsterdam is one of the keynote speakers at the Marketing Kingdom Cairo 2, Egypt’s biggest international marketing event, taking place from 26-27 October at the Fairmont Towers in Cairo.

Before joining TBWA Darre was chief creative officer at Ogilvy & Mather Amsterdam, Euro RSCG, DMB&B and was creative partner at the small local agency Amsterdam Advertising. His personal award list so far includes over 170 awards, of which 12 Cannes Lions including a Grand Prix. Darre is also responsible for the well-known campaign ‘Why wait until it’s too late’ for funeral insurance company DELA who became the Dutch advertiser of the year in 2012. The campaign is one of the most awarded campaigns in Dutch history.

We recently asked Darre to share with us, 5 tips for marketers in Egypt!

     Tip 1: Kill boring!

One way to compete with the daily information stimuli’s that consumers deal with is to avoid communicating too corporate and strained. Dig into topics that appeal to your target market, whether it is House of Cards on Netflix or watching cat videos on YouTube. Moreover, step away from the conventions in your branch and dare to tell your story differently.

Tip 2: Use technology and data to be engaging

People – and perhaps millennials in particular – love gadgets, technological developments and other innovations. If these can be put to use in a relevant way your brand will be able to distinguish itself from the masses of information that consumers filter through on a daily basis. Moreover, big data can provide surprising insights that can form the basis for relevance regarding the stories brands want to tell.

Tip 3: Tell authentic stories that play on people’s emotions

The time has come to really get to know your customer. Forget– even if it is just for a minute – what your brand seeks to communicate to the rest of the world. Focus instead on what it is your customer needs or seeks to experience. How can your brand do something that is meaningful, authentic and leaves a lasting impact on the customer? This might mean that the story you should tell, is not directly related to your brand and the product it sells. And that is ok, as long as it remains relevant.

Tip 4: Show guts by being vulnerable

In our well-connected and progressively transparent world, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep control of the messages that circulate around your brand.  While brands are learning to deal with this phenomenon, it remains that they are naturally inclined to keep a firm hold of the reins. Loosening these reinsand accepting, perhaps even welcoming transparency, portrays guts and authenticity that will be appreciated.

Tip 5: Don’t Accept the Acceptable

As hackneyed as it sounds: dare to disrupt, and dare to disrupt yourself in particular. Scan the conventions in the market and try to break with them in order to identify and optimize new whitespace opportunities. To many, the term disruption could generate a feeling of distress, and that is fine. It actually should feel uncomfortable and a little off. Besides that, we often mistake disruption for transformative and costlytechnological change. However, disruption does not have to be costly, it is a mind-set that looks past restrictions that have been set by industry processes and familiarity. The following case illustrates how Apple, one of the most innovative companies in the world, continues to be a game changer through simplistic, yet disruptive thinking over a wide spectrum.

  • Facebook’s testing a new layout design for pages

Facebook’s testing a new layout design for pages

Facebook is testing a new layout design for pages, which adds three columns to pages layout, aiming to make information more accessible and organized for visiting-users.

Here’s a list of the major changes to the new layout design for pages:

    • Left Column: a new sticky-sidebar includes the profile picture, so whenever you scroll down, you will be able to see your page logo, name, shortcuts to about, videos, tabs and other details (see screenshot).
    • Middle Column: includes cover image, week insights, then timeline posts. The cover image is now standing-alone big-image, without any overlay details likes profile picture or even the page name.
    • Right Column: this new sidebar includes the “about” box, page videos, custom tabs icons, current events, this sidebar isn’t sticky but smart scrolling.
    • Ad-free: no more Facebook ads on the right column, so you won’t see ads from competitors or any other brands/entity showing to your visiting customers.
    • Page call to action has been moved to the right-hand side under the cover image and above the page category label.

  • Egyptian Cantalop Receives a Seed Funding of $100,000

Egyptian Cantalop Receives a Seed Funding of $100,000

The “job search engine” Cantalop received a seed funding of $100,000 from an anonymous businessman to accelerate the startup efforts in connecting job searchers with top-notch companies in the MENA region.

Yasin Halawany, co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Cantalop, told Digital Boom, the idea for the company was born as Egypt went through political turmoil.

“During the past period, the Middle East and North Africa have witnessed a lot of turmoil, changes and chaos. The people of these countries decided to rise up against the obstacles they were facing in developing a better life and a better future,” he said.

“That’s where the idea for Cantalop came from. We aim to support the economies and people for a better life and promising future through tackling the unemployment issue, simplifying the process of job searching, and bridging the gap between employers and job seekers.”

Halawany said there was an opportunity for companies such as Cantalop as Egyptians increasingly turn to the internet for achieving their objectives. Yet there are a plethora of such sites available, employing a range of different business models, which does not necessarily help those looking for jobs online.

The traditional job board model, where companies list positions that need filling, is limited, he said, as the number of jobs on such boards is relatively small compared to the overall online job market. Job aggregators, meanwhile, collecting jobs from anywhere regardless the source of the job post, are usually “full of spam, duplications and fake jobs”.

A job search engine (Cantalop) only indexes verified jobs that come directly from the source and in this case it is directly from the employer. It does this by using crawling and spidering technology to index and update the jobs automatically. With 100% of Cantalop jobs being indexed exclusively from corporate websites, we’ve created a far better user experience by connecting candidates directly to employers.

  • Zain Telecom interested in Egypt 4G license

Zain Telecom interested in Egypt 4G license

Kuwaiti mobile operator Zain has expressed interest in acquiring a fourth-generation license in Egypt, a senior telecommunications ministry official said on Sunday – Reported Reuters.

Its telecoms regulator has approached the three current mobile service providers, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, and Etisalat Misr, about potentially buying 4G licenses.

The current operators have until the first week of August to submit applications for a 4G license.

Communications Minister Yasser al-Kadi told Reuters in June that Egypt would offer 4G licences in an international auction if the existing carriers were not interested.

The senior telecoms ministry official said Zain, which operates in eight countries in the Middle East and Africa, had sent a letter expressing its interest.

“Zain sent us a letter showing desire to enter the Egyptian market through 4G licenses with the set conditions put forward by the government,” the official said, declining to be named.

    Zain declined to comment.

  • Egypt’s Press Propagates for Turkish Coup, Misleads Readers

Egypt’s Press Propagates for Turkish Coup, Misleads Readers

Egypt’s front-page headlines reported Saturday that Turkish military leaders who organized a coup to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are in control of the country.

The attempted military coup which started Friday night was foiled by the early hours of Saturday morning.

Egyptian newspapers, including the state-owned Al Ahram, the privately-owned Al Watan and Al Masry Youm reported in their early morning editions that Erdogan had been ousted by a military coup. Erdogan gave a speech in Istanbul to thousands of his supporters after eight hours of an attempted military coup to overthrow him.

Relations between Cairo and Ankara have been deteriorating since the ouster of Mohamed Morsi, former elected Egyptian president who was forced to step down by the army following mass protests calling for his removal from office. Morsi’s ouster marked the end of the Muslim Brotherhood’s one year in power, during which Turkish-Egyptian bilateral relations were at their best. Animosity towards Turkey’s Erdogan is common in Egypt’s politicized media, which openly criticize Erdogan for supporting the Muslim Brotherhood.

Egyptian TV presenters echoed the same anti-Erdogan rhetoric, expressing support for the attempted military coup on social media as well as on several TV talk shows.
