EU referendum: David Beckham backs ‘Remain’ campaign

Former England captain David Beckham made it to the “Remain” camp, with a statement comparing staying with European Union to Manchester United winning formula. The statement has generated over 30K tweets by people with and against the decision. Beckham’s statement in support of Britain remaining in the European Union comes days ahead of EU referendum – Published on Stronger in Europe Campaign early this morning.

    Social Media Backlash

People reactions weren’t as good as the press release, as British people started to criticize Beckham. We’ve collected some of the most discussed ideas, @daiisyemm tweeted ironically, “David Beckham’s spoken!! We must blindly follow (the well known political expert).”, while Roddy Piper is wondering if David Beckham has ever tried to get his kids into a State School in the UK, or a GP appointment. No? Thought not. he ended his tweet with #VoteLeave. Sh An Khan confirmed the same idea “David Beckham is backing remain. He won’t have any problems with finding a house or rising prices, school places for kids, NHS waiting times”

On the other side, UK’s PM David Cameron quoted Beckham in a tweet saying “David Beckham is clear, we should be facing problems of the world together and not alone.”

Here’s the full  statement by David Beckham on the remain decision

“I’m passionate about my country and whatever the result of Thursday’s referendum, we will always be Great. Each side has the right to their opinion and that should always be respected whatever the outcome of the European Referendum.

I played my best years at my boyhood club, Manchester United. I grew up with a core group of young British players that included Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and the Neville Brothers. Added to that was an experienced group of older British players such as Gary Pallister, Steve Bruce and Paul Ince.

Now that team might have gone on to win trophies but we were a better and more successful team because of a Danish goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, the leadership of an Irishman Roy Keane and the skill of a Frenchman in Eric Cantona.

I was also privileged to play and live in Madrid, Milan and Paris with teammates from all around Europe and the world. Those great European cities and their passionate fans welcomed me and my family and gave us the opportunity to enjoy their unique and inspiring cultures and people.

We live in a vibrant and connected world where together as a people we are strong. For our children and their children we should be facing the problems of the world together and not alone.

For these reasons I am voting to Remain.”

  • David Cameron sends his greetings to all Muslim for Ramadan

David Cameron sends his greetings to all Muslim for Ramadan

The Prime Minister David Cameron sends his greetings to all Muslim communities for the holy month of Ramadan, in Britain and around the world.

    The Full transcript

It’s the holy month of Ramadan – a time when mosques open their doors, community centres welcome in their neighbours, and even churches and synagogues offer up their spaces as Muslims break their fasts – and people of all faiths and none are often asked to join.

Coventry Cathedral is holding its own multi-faith iftar. In Manchester, they’re combining an iftar with England’s European Championships appearance. And homeless shelters up and down the country are holding ‘Iftars with the Homeless’.

Of course, fasting is what comes to mind when we think of Ramadan. It’s part of the month that really puts Muslims’ faith to the test – especially during these long, warm days.

But there is much more to it.

There is all the energy and money people donate to those who are less fortunate and all the extra time spent in prayer and contemplation.

Uppermost in all our minds this Ramadan are those whose lives have been torn apart by the twin evils of Assad and Daesh, all those families spending this holy month in refugee camps mourning loved ones; yearning to go back to school or work; wondering when they’ll return home again.

Our thoughts – whatever our backgrounds or beliefs – are with them. And we must continue to support the people of Syria and the region, as we work towards a lasting political solution. Because that’s who we are as a country. We won’t walk on by. So this Ramadan, let’s renew our resolve to help those victims.

Let’s continue to come together for iftars and community events. Let’s celebrate the proud, multi-racial, multi-faith democracy we live in. To everyone in Britain and around the world – Ramadan Mubarak.

  • Here’s why Muhammad Ali refused to serve in the US army

Here’s why Muhammad Ali refused to serve in the US army

A three-time world heavyweight champion and an Olympic gold-medallist, the legend Muhammad Ali has died Friday June 3, 2016, but his stances will remain to learn from and get inspired day over day.

Muhammad Ali was widely recognized for his role in fighting for civil rights. One of his famous stances when Ali refused to join the US army and fight in Vietnam War, April 28, 1967. What caused him losing the boxing license and being banned from fighting for three years.

“No, I’m not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over.

This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would cost me millions of dollars.

But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is here.

I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality.” – Muhammad Ali

Ali was later arrested. After he made three separate speeches explaining why he won’t go to war because of his non-violent Muslim faith and membership in the Nation of Islam.

    Rest in peace champion.

  • 3 Reasons Why Arsenal Should Hire an Egyptian Digital Agency

3 Reasons Why Arsenal Should Hire an Egyptian Digital Agency

When news of Arsenal’s interest in midfielder Mohamed Elneny leaked last December, thousands of enthusiastic Egyptians flooded the club’s social media space, generating more than 280k tweets and millions of Facebook impressions in three weeks.

Digital Boom analyzed the untapped potential of the club’s presence on the Egyptian social media sphere, providing three compelling reasons for Arsenal to hire a digital media agency in Egypt.First, let’s look at some facts.

165K tweeps generated 220k+ tweets upon Arsenal’s official announcement on Jan. 14

    Arsenal’s official announcement

How the world reacted over Elneny’s transfer to Arsenal

Heat map shows how the world reacted over Elneny’s transfer to Arsenal.

    Egyptians flood Arsenal’s Facebook page

    • Over 100K new fans from Egypt in 72 hours
    • Massive interactions on Elneny related posts
    • Fans expressed big support for Elneny and warned against excluding him from matches
    • Non-Arabic speaking Arsenal fans urged Egyptians to make their Facebook comments in English so that they could understand

Here’s a glimpse of what happened on Arsenal’s Facebook page:

Do you think it’s negative? Ok, let’s continue reading…

    Arsenal opportunities in Egypt

    1- Grow digitally

With a population of 90M, Egypt is considered one of the biggest countries in the Middle East and Africa region. There’re more than 40M Egyptian netizens, 27M on Facebook alone, 1.5M on Instagram and 1.4M on Twitter.

It only takes a few months to win Egyptians’ hearts

Arsenal’s Facebook page hit 100K new likes in less than 72 hours of announcing ElNeny’s GBP 7.4M 4-year contract, signaling a huge opportunity to grow Arsenal’s fanbase in the Middle East and win over La Liga and Premier League clubs.

Arsenal has only 1.9M Egyptian fans on Facebook, and the number is expected to skyrocket after Elneny’s transfer

    2- Commercial opportunities

    Mobile content monetization

Egypt has around 60M active mobile users, and only 40M of which are connected to the internet. Half of them use smartphones and the rest prefer featured phones.

With 40M phone users relying on featured devices, Arsenal has an opportunity to harness the revenue potential of SMS subscription content services which is financially rewarding (Check Chelsea’s case study).

Increase sales in the MENA region

Again, it’s a great opportunity to start distributing the club’s products to increase sales from the Middle East

    3- Regional sponsorship opportunities

Brands tend to partner with sports clubs who already have regional existence in the region.

So will Arsenal grab the opportunity and hire an Egyptian digital media agency?

  • Apple Shuts Down Topsy, Permanently

    Apple Shuts Down Topsy, Permanently

In case you’re trying to access www.topsy.com and always get redirected to Apple support page, here’s the bad news:
Apple has shut down Topsy, the social research tool, which specialized in analyzing twitter data and other social media platforms. The tool delivers quantitive and qualitative analysis about any given hashtag/keyword in real-time like no other online.
Two years ago, Apple acquired Topsy for $200 million, in a move everyone didn’t figure out the reason behind. Since acquired, the tool wasn’t accepting any new paid subscriptions, but functioning all free with limited access to 30+ days historical data and some advanced insights. Yesterday, Topsy announced on twitter the last day of operations with this tweet “We’ve Searched out last tweet”.

Apple didn’t release any statement to explain the sudden decision or if there’re any future plans for the social analytics tool, as well as there’re no media reports about the company’s intentions.
Topsy is one of the most efficient tools for social marketers, as it helps exploring historical data of any given hashtag/keyword, provides insights such as sentiment analysis, top influencers, tweets, posts, and videos in addition to buzz trend.

  • Gloria Ceramic proves social media can empower brands

Gloria Ceramic proves social media can empower brands

How many often talk the social media talk on behalf of their brands/companies versus who actually walk the social media walk to improve the brand awareness, loyalty and sales?
Gloria Ceramic’s exceptional decision to produce 2016 collection before its time just because of a comment on Facebook, gives us a glimpse on how social media can empower brands with minimum marketing efforts.
It all started when a customer “Yassmin Sakr” left a comment on Facebook saying that “she went to Gloria Ceramic showroom to choose designs for her new house, however some of the chosen designs are from the new 2016 collection and will be released early next year, but she only has 2 weeks before she gets married.

    First respond

The company responded traditionally stating that the new collection will be released between Jan and Feb 2016 with a decent apology. That’s ok! No problem

“Because social media is beyond traditional customer service”

    Second respond

In what appears to be an internal follow-up to the customer feedback. After 22 hours from the first reply, the company published the second reply asking Yassmin “the customer” to send her mobile number in a private message.

    How costly this decision?

Next day, Gloria Ceramic replied to the thread confirming that they will exceptionally produce the chosen designs from the 2016 collection, alongside with a letter from the CEO wishing her a happy marriage. How cool is that?

    The positive dialog continues

    Takeaways:

    • Traditional customer service is ok, but don’t expect exceptional results (you’re there to just be there, nothing important)
    • Executive management members have to listen well to social media daily status report in order to make the right decisions if needed
    • Empower your social media team to take the lead and decide for your brand (requires an excellent sync)
    • Good brand reputation brings sales

Emirates Airline Fires Up Benfica Fans

Dressed in their elegant beige uniforms and red hats, Emirates airline hostesses walked into the soccer field’s center circle to deliver safety-like match instructions, leaving around 65k Benfica fans fired up ahead of the game.
Keeping up with the Benfica tradition, the Emirates crew demonstrated how fans should cheer for their team in the event of scoring a goal by raising the team’s red scarf.

The Emirates-Benfica video went viral on social media, generating 1M views in the first 12 hours.

Emirates signed a three-year sponsorship deal with the Portuguese club last May to join the list of top European football clubs sponsored by Emirates, including Arsenal, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Hamburger SV, Paris Saint-Germain, and Olympiacos FC.

  • Top Engaging Sham El-Nessim Activations on Social Media

Top Engaging Sham El-Nessim Activations on Social Media

Sham El-Nessim, or “Smelling/Taking In of the Zephyrs,” is an Egyptian national holiday marking the beginning of spring. It always falls on the day after the Eastern Christian ‘Easter’. Despite the Christian-related date, the holiday is celebrated by Egyptians regardless of religion, over time the holiday was settled on Easter Monday.
Egyptians used to celebrate Sham El-Nessim by visiting parks and zoos, going on picnics, eating certain foods (Salted and smoked Herrings, Fermented fish “Fesikh”), coloring and eating eggs.
Brands in Egypt used to take the opportunity to celebrate with Egyptians by presenting special promotions. After social media, almost all brands are building on the happy & fun atmosphere that Sham El-Nessim creates, it also became one of the country’s yearly competition between brands in different industries.
This year, we scanned the online scene in Egypt and came up with the following top engaging activities done on social media celebrating the Egyptian holiday Sham El-Nessim.

TODO Wins It All With Engaging Replies

    https://www.facebook.com/todohatozbot/photos/a.317098558351964.73970.159120180816470/875041269224354/?type=1
TODO team followed their advertisements line by making fun of TODO character being colored by his TODO friends because he forgot to bring the eggs for Sham El-Nessim occasion, however that wasn’t the most engaging part, but the way they managed fan’s comments were the most engaging one, they understand their fans and know well how to engage them positively.

Coca Cola Egypt 100 FARHA Music Video

Coca Cola around the world is celebrating 100 years since the first bottle was produced, and there’s no better occasion than Sham El-Nessim to to start celebrating 100 Farha campaign. Coca Cola decided to take this activation exclusively online, as they didn’t broadcast the music video in any TV channel up till, Coca Cola also uploaded a music version of Soundcloud to let fans download the song and enjoy Sham El-Nessim.

    Clorets Egypt Smart & Simple

    https://www.facebook.com/CloretsEgypt/photos/a.10150523586851941.397600.15293076940/10153217835751941/?type=1&theater
Sham El-Nessim is known by traditional food eaten on this day consists mainly of Feseekh (a salted Grey Mullet), smoked herrings, lettuce, scallions or green onions, tirmis or Lupini Beans, and colored boiled eggs, which cause mouth unwanted smell.
Clorets team in Egypt made it smart in language “Feseekh Terminator”, simple & attractive in the creative design, which makes a winning combination on social media.

    Etisalat Misr Funny Meme

    https://www.facebook.com/etisalatmisr/photos/a.149674009666.112537.141606109666/10152990018859667/?type=1&theater
Etisalat Misr decided to engage their fans with a funny meme, capitalizing on their latest ADSL TV ad featuring two fishes who are discussing what’s around in a funny way. This time, the female fish said: “I’m so happy that Sham El-Nessim is coming on Monday this year”, the male fish replied ironically: “Sham El-Nessim is always on Monday, foolish!”.

SeaStar Egypt Simplifying Their Smoked Herrings “Ringa” with a Complex Video

    https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=928600100513529&set=vb.332839903422888&type=2&theater
Seastar is the leading salmon and herring processor in the Middle East and Africa. This year they decided to create a video on Facebook, positioning their smoked herrings as the most easier, safer, and delicious vs other Ringa suppliers in Egypt.
Viewers found it difficult to understand, that’s why they started to comment in a negative and questionary way, stating that the video is too short to understand the message, wasn’t funny and asking what is it about?

    SeaStar Could Win It All:

The video got a high number of views and shares on Facebook, which means that it succeeded to find its way to people in a way or another, however, it missed two things to make it almost a winning case:
1- Add something to the caption to summarize the video main message, that could make it much easier for people to understand and spread the needed message.
2- Leaving people to assume on Facebook wasn’t a good reaction, Facebook community managers have to reply fans’ comments, and check shares if people have negative comments on shares to clarify and simplify the message if they couldn’t get it.
This way SeaStar can deliver the message clearly, and increase the positive shares. In social media, you should educate your advocates, if you didn’t they will turn against you or influence others to mock you.
We tried our best to collect the most unique and useful activations from different industries, but we believe that this’s not everything, there’re many other brilliant ideas in Egypt and would appreciate if you share anything you might find useful with us. Thank you!
    Happy Sham El-Nessim everyone 🙂

  • Facebook Video Obsession Spoils a Charitable Cause

Facebook Video Obsession Spoils a Charitable Cause

Copying someone else’s content is unethical but did you ever imagine that downloading a Youtube video and sharing it on your Facebook page could stop floods of donations from going to orphans?
A Facebook community page copied a social media awareness video which was created by the Prague-based Hayot Films video production studio as part of its #Likelife campaign, which has two main objectives:

    1. Hayot Films will donate the Youtube monetization money to charita.CZ – a non-profit organization that supports orphans in need, regardless of age, gender, religion, or ethnicity.
    2. People who watch the video or share the direct link will automatically become members of the project, raising online awareness about the cause. Read more about the project #LikeLife

    Original Video from Youtube

How Can Stealing Content Harm a Charitable Cause?

The campaign video went viral after being copied by the Facebook page, which probably found it an opportunity to gain more views and likes out of this professionally executed video despite the disclaimer that clearly states the video’s cause. Stolen Facebook Video Views

Digital Boom contacted HayotFilms to check whether the page allegedly stole their video negatively affected the campaign reach. HeyotFilms responded:

“It’s sad that our video on Youtube is not getting enough views because it’s monetized on Youtube, and we wanted to give money from this for charity. We can’t control the Internet; not only does that Facebook page publish the video on their own page, but also on other pages. Our video was published in 3 languages on Youtube, and the summary already got about 40 000 views. Our goals were to show this video for more people to think about their social life and the second one is help for charity. The first one is ok; we already got more than 1,500,000 views (updated), the second one is not good. We really wanted to give money from monetization on Youtube for charity. We’ll see how much we will gain.”HayotFilms Reply

How to protect your copyrights on social media?

You always need to monitor your work online, check if someone copied it and didn’t give you the proper credit, or if that infringes your copyrights, so you can quickly contact the platform help desk to take down the stolen pieces and save your business from losing opportunities because of internet thieves.
We strongly argue HayotFilms to report trademark and content infringement using this form.
