StartEgypt Hosts First Female Founders Forum

The pre-acceleration program, StartEgypt, hosted its first virtual forum for female entrepreneurs, the Female Founders Forum.

The one-day virtual event attended by over 300 up-and-coming female Egyptian entrepreneurs saw leading experts from tech giants Dell Technologies, Google, and YouTube provide key insights and training on how to get these start-ups from concept to implementation.

Designed to inspire and empower women considering starting their own business, the forum offered them the opportunity to learn from the experiences of influential females in the business and entrepreneurial world, as they discussed the differences, challenges, and opportunities faced by females as entrepreneurs or in the corporate world.

A panel discussion featured Flat6labs graduate Sabrine Assem, co-founder & CEO at UNTAP Technologies, Mai Abbas, Education Services Manager for RSA Security by Dell Technologies.

Talking about their decision to host the virtual forum, Hassan Mansi, StartEgypt Program Director, said, “Flat6Labs has maintained a gender ratio of 30%-females amongst its incubation and accelerator programs due to a solid belief in the ability of Egyptian female entrepreneurs to lead and drive the economy forward. This has been evident in their role as breadwinners across all socio-economic levels. We offer the opportunity for aspiring female entrepreneurs to unleash their potential and to continue having a positive impact on the Egyptian economy.”

In addition to the panel discussion, experts from Google and YouTube also shared their know-how via two training workshops on digital marketing and product management to support young women in actualizing their ambitions to establish their own businesses. The forum also hosted the CEO of Azza Fahmy Jewelry, Fatma Ghali, for a fireside chat.

As well as encouraging aspiring women to set out on their entrepreneurial journey, StartEgypt hopes that the forum will allow them to connect with promising female start-ups that they can incubate. “Earlier this year, the Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation committed to increasing female participation in the workforce by 40%, by 2030,” said Mansi, adding that he hoped StartEgypt could contribute to achieving this developmental goal.

StartEgypt has previously organized multiple, nationwide workshops led by seasoned guest speakers and entrepreneurs. The Female Founders Forum is set to become an annual event, acting as a springboard for women exploring the possibility of launching their own businesses.

  • Facebook Launches ‘#LoveLocal’ campaign to support local businesses in MENA

Facebook Launches ‘#LoveLocal’ campaign to support local businesses in MENA

Facebook has launched a new initiative to offer digital support to local small and medium businesses in the MENA region, which suffered the hardest during the Coronavirus pandemic.

#LoveLocal campaign aims to support SMBs regionally pivoting to digital and growth by highlighting several available resources for their economic recovery. The campaign will amplify the voices of SMBs and shed light on their stories and challenges to help generate consumer demand for local SMBs across the region.

    More articles from Facebook:

The initiative is being launched across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, to support local small and medium businesses recovering from the COVID-19 crisis.

Through #LoveLocal, Facebook provides business owners access to the MENA region SMB Training Hub platform.

The platform has up to 40 online webinars that businesses can use to master a range of digital tools covering digital marketing and e-commerce and develop and grow their online business presence. Courses have been developed in partnership with popular e-commerce platforms and Facebook partners such as ecomz, Expand Cart, and Zid.

The Future of Business Survey, an ongoing collaboration between Facebook, the World Bank, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), released a ‘Global State of Small Business’ report in July 2020 that found that 26% of SMBs globally had closed between January and May 2020.

“According to the report, in the MENA region, 70% of businesses reported reduced sales, with around 40% reducing their workforce in response to the pandemic,” said Ramez Shehadi, Managing Director for the Middle East & North Africa, Facebook.

“Small businesses are the backbone of any economy and pillars of their local communities. In these challenging times, SMBs need support from community members across the region. Our #LoveLocal campaign is aimed at supporting local businesses and driving communities towards greater engagement with them to bring sustenance and growth for SMBs now and on the road ahead.” he said.

Before COVID-19, a digital transformation of the economy was already underway. Current events have since accelerated the paradigm, evidenced by how customers shift their spending toward digital.

The report found that at least one-third of small and medium businesses globally indicated that they had earned a minimum of 25% of their sales from digital channels in the previous 30 days.

The SMB Training Hub will therefore give MENA small and medium business owners access to Facebook’s Business Resource Hub, an online skills training program for courses such as:

    1. How to grow your online store with social media.

    2. Keys to a successful digital transformation.

SMB owners can also learn about Facebook’s grants program and new marketing skills to grow their businesses during these times.

Business owners will also have access to free webinars, where they can learn how to best use free Facebook and Instagram tools to connect with customers and the business community in these challenging times.

“It is clear that a key way for SMBs to survive the pandemic is to pivot to digital to access a wider radius of consumers beyond their traditional physical reach. Entrepreneurs can register for free online courses to receive insights on Facebook’s services and tools that can help them get online, boost leads, and grow online commercial engagement,” said Shehadi, stressing the need for businesses to develop digital skills to unlock opportunities.

“Our online resources and tools can help small business owners with tips, training, and much more to learn, live, and work more readily and effectively in the digital world.”

Earlier this year, Facebook launched several ‘Boost with Facebook’ initiatives deployed across countries in MENA with local partners. The ‘Boost with Facebook’ program, designed to help small businesses grow by expanding their digital skills, provides virtual learning sessions to upskill startups and SMBs, helping them advance the marketing aspects of their respective companies.

Consumers can also join the initiative by using the hashtag #LoveLocal to show how they are supporting local businesses and sharing their local buying experiences towards this initiative.

  • ‘It’s time to utilize tech for better healthcare services’ Said Tabibi 24/7 CEO

‘It’s time to utilize tech for better healthcare services’ Said Tabibi 24/7 CEO

As the tech breakthrough is invading each detail in our daily life, healthcare experts see that it’s high time to utilize tech for better healthcare industry as well.

An Egyptian pediatrician has started his journey more than six years ago in order to utilize technology in his Cairo-based start-up Tabibi 24/7.

Talking to the passionate founder and pediatrician, Khalil Abdel khalek, he explained that the healthcare industry in the most populous country of Egypt is in a dire need to be more organized and user-friendly to both patients and physicians themselves.

“We see a major community problem when some patients resort to the nearest pharmacies or ask their families for medical advice. This usually does not yield an accurate diagnosis and delays the discovery of illnesses at early stage,” Abdel Khalek said.

Tabibi 24/7 is a full-integrated healthcare service that can be at your doorstep either by calling their hotline or through booking via its online portal.

The idea of the start-up is to be innovative in dealing with each case, rather than the traditional long system of medical care in Egypt.

“There is a wide array of innovative services such as vaccinations and lab test services at home, electronic medical records, sports and nutrition programs including physical and psychological preparation of children and adults, home care for the elderly or patients who have just left the hospital,” Abdel Khalek added.

Through his experience with the healthcare industry, Abdel Khalek said that linking each family member to an e-report medical system does help the whole medication process become more accurate and easier.

He notes: “Each member in Tabibi 24/7 services can easily submit his/her details on the website, and follow up his/medical history.”

Reaching more than 100,000 patients, the Egyptian healthcare startup is offering home examinations by family doctors and pediatrician, aiming at facilitating the healthcare process, saving time and supporting easier communication between doctor and patient.

The team comprises of 40 practitioners who receive regular advanced training that keeps them ahead in today’s medicine.

Mohamed Alaa, Tabibi 24/7’s family medicine specialist adds: “Building bonds of trust and credibility between the family doctor and the patient is the main pillar of the doctor – patient relationship.

“Patients appreciate and understand the importance of this relationship, although some cases would need a transfer to a specialist or to stay at a hospital. At such times the patient and his/her parents always feel safe when consulting or dealing with his family doctor. This is unlike specialized doctors who temporarily deal with the patient,” Alaa added.
