    Small business owners optimistic about economic recovery post-COVID

    In partnership with the World Bank and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Facebook published the Global State of Small Business report based on a survey of small business owners from around the world.

    The report is the first in an ongoing series planned before the virus struck and is based on data from surveying more than 30,000 small business leaders across more than 50 countries.

    This research aims to amplify the voice of SMBs and assess how their situations are changing.

    Small businesses are the heart of the community – and the unsung heroes of the global economy. From coffee shops, bookstores, and restaurants to plumbers, wedding planners, and graphic designers, small businesses create jobs and growth in every country, reducing poverty and income inequality. But they are facing the challenge of a lifetime.

    The COVID-19 pandemic is not just a public health emergency. It is also an economic crisis that is hitting small and medium-sized businesses exceptionally hard. Globally, 26% of SMBs reported that they had closed between January and May 2020 – over 50% in some countries.

    SMBs are in urgent need of cash and customers to run businesses and pay salaries. The report saw a significant proportion of SMBs, reducing their workforce in response to the pandemic at the survey time. Egypt (51%), UAE (50%), and KSA (35%) have reduced the number of employees/workers because of COVID-19. Other key stats from the report showed that Egypt (73%), UAE (81%), and KSA (64%) reported that their sales this year are lower than last year.

    Entrepreneurs are resilient people, and the report shows that many Facebook SMB owners remain optimistic about their businesses’ future, despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic. According to the report, 52% of SMBs in Egypt, 61% in the UAE, and 59% in KSA are optimistic about their businesses post-COVID.

    Globally, nearly three quarters (74%) of SMBs closed at the time of the survey expect to reopen as COVID-19 containment measures are lifted. For example, in the sampled countries, the most cited activity by business leaders of closed businesses was working on plans for reopening. In Egypt (57%), UAE (65%), and KSA (65%) reported some of the highest proportions of SMBs that are operational or engaging in any revenue-generating activities.

    The increasing pace and unpredictability of change brought on by the pandemic have encouraged small businesses to adopt a proactive rather than reactive approach to getting back to business. According to the survey, the only way for SMBs to survive the pandemic is a pivot to digital.

    The report found that at least one-third of SMBs indicated that they had earned a minimum of 25% of their sales from digital channels in the previous 30 days. In Egypt (35%), the UAE (40%), and in KSA (29%) of operational SMBs on Facebook reported that 25% of their sales were made digitally in the past month.

    “SMBs are vital to the global economy and play a big role in Facebook’s community – and since the early days of the pandemic, we have taken steps to help them weather the storm. That is why we recently launched Facebook Shops to make it easier to sell online and created our Business Resource Hub, where small business owners can get training, advice, and information – including guidance from healthcare experts,” said Ramez Shehadi, Managing Director of Facebook MENA.

    “The path to recovery is uncertain, and as economies start to re-open, SMBs will need continued support from governments or other institutions to get back on track – we hope this report will help identify areas where that support can make the biggest difference. These are challenging times for businesses throughout the world, and Facebook is determined to do all we can to help them make it through.”

    According to Facebook, over 160 million businesses use Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or WhatsApp every month. Over the next six months, SMBs in more than 50 countries and regions will be surveyed monthly regarding business operations in the context of COVID-19 to capture the impacts of the pandemic on the financials and challenges of SMBs, as well as adjustments being implemented in response to the crisis.

    Japanese owned​ ​Rakuten Viber​, one of the world’s leading messaging apps for free and secure communication, announces it will cut all business ties with Facebook. The messaging app will remove Facebook Connect, Facebook SDK, and GIPHY, as well as cease all ad spending on the social networking platform, leveling up the growing #StopHateForProfit movement to boycott the tech goliath.

    Amid the protests that broke out all over the U.S. over the past few weeks, a group of six organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League and NAACP, called on Facebook advertisers to pause their spending on the social networking site during the month of July over the company’s inability to protect users from hate speech. On top of numerous instances of data misconduct, including the infamous Cambridge Analytica scandal in which the political consulting firm improperly harvested data of up to 87 million Facebook users, Viber sees Facebook’s hate-speech stumble as the last straw. As such, the messaging app is taking the #StopHateForProfit movement a step further, cutting all business ties with Facebook.

    Djamel Agaoua, Viber’s CEO: “Facebook continues to demonstrate poor judgment in understanding its role in today’s world. From the company’s mishandling of data and lack of privacy in its apps to its outrageous stand of avoiding the steps necessary to protect the public from violent and dangerous rhetoric, Facebook has gone too far. We are not the arbiters of truth, but the truth is some people are suffering from the proliferation of violent content and companies must take a clear stand.”

    The actions to remove the relevant Facebook touchpoints from the Viber app are expected to be completed by the beginning of July 2020. Ad spending on Facebook will cease effective immediately.

    Cairo-based Fintech Startup MoneyFellows Raises US $4M in Series-A

    Egyptian fintech startup MoneyFellows has raised US $4 million in a Series-A investment round from venture capital (VC) firms Partech and Sawari Ventures.

    What is MoneyFellows?

    MoneyFellows helps users manage money circles by digitizing the informal traditional rotating savings and credit association model.

    The platform’s features include salary automated deductions, fixed payout dates as well as a smart scoring system

    The startup claims it has over 150,000 active users that are verified by a user assessment algorithm.

    It said the investment will be used to expand the company’s operations further across Egypt as well as into the continent. The company also plans to launch a slew of new products in the coming months.

    Wadi said Partech’s support from the investor’s African fund will help the startup to expand into other countries in the continent with “hands-on global expertise”.

    Sawari Ventures managing partner Hany Al Sonbaty said in the same statement that in enabling people to save beyond their immediate circles, the startup is helping larger numbers of people as they become more financially aware.

    The latest round follows a US $1 million round that the startup raised from 500 Startups, Dubai Angel Investors, and Phoenician Funds along with other undisclosed individual investors participated in the round.

    Egypt’s health ministry launches blood donation campaign in cooperation with Facebook

    Egyptian Minister of Health, Dr. Hala Zayed, has announced that the ministry’s National Blood Transfusion Service is teaming up with Facebook to launch a campaign to encourage individuals to donate blood.

    • Facebook’s public policy manager: ‘We are proud of the partnership with Egypt’s health ministry”

    The campaign, the first of its kind in the Middle East, aims to motivate anyone who has recovered from COVID-19 to donate plasma to patients in critical condition, following evidence that plasma therapy can have a positive impact on disease outcome, Zayed said.

    Dr. Khaled Megahed, Ministry of Health Spokesman, said: “Facebook users over the age of 18 can sign up to be blood donors and they will be notified when there is a need for blood in their vicinity. They can also invite their Facebook friends to join the campaign.”

    People aged 18 to 65 can go to facebook.com/blooddonations to learn more and find nearby donation sites via 28 official blood centers, including five dedicated to coronavirus plasma donations, said Megahed.

    He underscored the importance of donating blood during this critical time, asserting that all precautionary measures have been implemented to ensure donors’ safety. “This partnership is a crucial step towards achieving overarching blood donation milestones and ensuring that reserves are available to sustain a robust healthcare system,” Megahed added.

    Nashwa Gad, Public Policy Manager, Facebook Egypt, expressed her pride in cooperating with the Egyptian Ministry of Health once more, highlighting the importance of the partnership in the context of Facebook’s efforts to support health agencies amid the ongoing crisis.

    Gad praised the previous collaboration between the ministry and Facebook which sought to raise awareness of the novel coronavirus and noted that the new campaign would help donors access accurate information and familiarize themselves with existing guidelines on the donation of blood and plasma.

    Facebook is rolling out Messenger Kids to countries in Africa and the Middle East to help parents connect their kids with their friends and family. Starting today, parents across MENA will be able to download the app from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

    The app will roll out in Algeria; Bahrain; Egypt; Iran; Iraq; Jordan; Kuwait; Lebanon; Libya; Morocco; Oman; Palestine; Qatar; Saudi Arabia; South Sudan; Sudan; Syria; Tunisia; the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

    As many communities are managing a response to COVID-19, with schools closed and people practicing physical distancing, parents are turning to technology more than ever to help their kids connect with friends and family, and looking to do so in a parent-controlled way.

    Messenger Kids is a video chat and messaging app that helps kids connect with friends and family in a fun, parent-controlled space.

    Facebook has worked closely with Facebook’s Youth Advisors, a team of experts in online safety, child development, and media, to help shape the Messenger Kids app.

    Made for Kids, Controlled by Parents

    Messenger Kids is full of features for kids to connect with the people they love. Once their account is set up by a parent, kids can start a one-on-one or group video chat. The home screen shows them at a glance who they are connected to, and when those contacts are online.

    Playful masks, emojis and sound effects bring conversations to life.

    In addition to video chat, kids can send photos, videos or text messages to their parent-approved friends and adult relatives, who will receive the messages via their regular Messenger app.

    A library of kid-appropriate and specially chosen GIFs, frames, stickers, masks and drawing tools lets them decorate content and express their personalities.

    Messenger Kids gives parents more control. Parents manage the contact list and have visibility into how their kids are using the app. Parents control kids’ accounts and manage their contacts through the Messenger Kids Parent Dashboard in their main Facebook iOS and Android app:

    Parental control is at the heart of Messenger Kids. Parents can control and monitor their child’s activity in the app through the Parent Dashboard, located in the parent’s Facebook app. Through the Parent Dashboard, parents can:

    Monitor recent contacts, chat history, and reported and blocked contacts: See who your child is chatting with, whether they are video chatting or sending messages and how frequently those conversations happened over the past 30 days.

    You’ll also see a list of the contacts your child has blocked and/or unblocked if they have reported any messages as well as any contacts they’ve reported and the reason for their action. Parents will continue to be notified via Messenger if their child blocks or reports someone.

    See a log of images and videos in chats: See the most recent photos and videos your child has sent and received in their inbox. If you believe an image or video is not appropriate for your child, you can remove it from your child’s message thread and report it.

    Set Sleep Mode: Parents can limit the time their children spend in the app by setting predetermined “off times” for the app on the child’s device through the Parent Dashboard. While Sleep Mode is active, the child will not be able to use the app.

    Enable Supervised Friending: This feature will enable parents to choose to allow their kids to also accept, reject, add or remove contacts, while maintaining the ability to override any new contact approvals from the Parent Dashboard.

    When a kid takes a friending action, parents will be notified through Messenger and can override any new connections made by going to the Parent Dashboard, where they will also be able to see a log of recent activities.

    Remote Device Logout: See all devices where your child is logged in to Messenger Kids and log out of the app on any device through the Parent Dashboard.

    (Note: This feature is not meant to control when kids have access to the app – try Sleep Mode for that.)

    Download your child’s information: Request a copy of your child’s Messenger Kids information, similar to how you can download your own information within the Facebook app. The download will include a list of your child’s contacts as well as the messages, images, and videos they have sent and received. Your child will be notified through the Messenger Kids app when you request this information.

    How to Get Started With Messenger Kids?

    Every child’s account on Messenger Kids must be set up by a parent. For parents, setting your child up with a Messenger Kids account is done in four steps:

    • Download: First, download the Messenger Kids app on your child’s iPad, iPod touch, or iPhone. Messenger Kids will also be available in the Google Play Store and on Android devices.
    • Authenticate: Then, authenticate your child’s device using your own Facebook username and password. This will not create a Facebook account for your child or give them access to your Facebook account.
    • Create an account: Finish the setup process by creating an account for your child, where you’ll provide their name and opt-in to any additional features. The device can then be handed over to the child so they can start chatting with family and friends.
    • Add contacts: To add people to your child’s contact list, go to the Messenger Kids Parent Dashboard panel in your main Facebook app. To get there, click on “More” on the bottom right corner in your main Facebook app, and click “Messenger Kids” in the Explore section

    There are no ads in Messenger Kids and your child’s information isn’t used for ads. It is free to download and there are no in-app purchases.
