  • 5 Marketing Tips By Nielsen’s VP Of Social Media

5 Marketing Tips By Nielsen’s VP Of Social Media

The Marketing Kingdom Cairo, Egypt’s biggest marketing event this season features groundbreaking presentations by marketing gurus from Twitter, Facebook, Google, Yahoo!, Shazam and Coca-Cola.
Among the unparalleled line of speakers is also Katie Morse, VP Social Media at Nielsen.
She is responsible for developing Nielsen’s global social media strategy, overseeing global execution and analysis, and developing Nielsen’s social media training program. Katie began her 10+-year marketing career working on B2B direct marketing programs in the telecommunications industry and has since worked on digital marketing initiatives for brands including American Express, Radian6, and Billboard – including creating the social media strategy for the 2012 and 2013 Billboard Music Awards.
We recently sat down with her and asked her to give us 5 tips for marketers in today’s rapidly changing world. Here advise is below:

1- Think in terms of location and environment instead of only demographics.

Assume that your messages will reach recipients while they’re out in the world, and likely multi-tasking. Think about when you want to connect with them and where you want that connection to take place, instead of only who you want them to do once they see your message. For example, think about how a Mom may see your message — are her kids still up? Is she trying to get a few things accomplished at once? What resources may she be using to accomplish everything on her plate? Think about the overall experience, instead of just the end result.

2- Don’t underestimate the importance of email and search.

It’s easy to focus on new media opportunities like social and mobile, but don’t forget the continued importance of reaching people in their email inboxes, and being easy to find online. These are two consistently key ways to connect with your stakeholders and potential customers, and make sure to invest efforts into developing those strategies and channels as much as you do your new media channels.

    3- Be consistent across channels.

Make sure your messaging and imagery are consistent across all channels — not just for multi-channel campaigns, but for everyday interactions with your company as well.

4- Make sure you’re optimized for all screens.

Many companies still think “desktop first”, even though smartphones and tablets lead the charge in consumption across many mediums — social media to name one.

5- Use unsolicited feedback to your advantage.

Many people use social media tools as a way to speak up and voice their kudos and complaints about companies. Use this feedback to your advantage and share the information with the relevant departments at your company.

  • Tips For Marketers By Unilever’s Media Director

Tips For Marketers By Unilever’s Media Director

Asad Ur Rehman, Media Director MENA at Unilever is one of the keynote speakers at the Marketing Kingdom Cairo, Egypt’s first ever international marketing event, taking place from 25-26 October at the InterContinental Citystars Hotel in Cairo.
Asad manages Unilever’s media investments across the Middle East and North Africa region. He is also responsible for driving communication excellence and innovation as well as digital as a discipline across the region. Asad has been in this role since August 2013, prior to which he managed Global Media for Unilever’s Foods business based out of Unilever’s HQ in London. Prior to joining Unilever, Asad did various assignments for MindShare/Group M in various parts of the world. He managed local offices in Vietnam and Pakistan for them, did a global role in London, and managed regional projects in AsiaPac and LATAM.
We recently sat down with him and asked him about his views and tips on today’s rapidly changing marketing world from his experience as a media director at Unilever. His fascinating anwers are below:

    1. The speed of change will never be this slow ever again. Be nimble, agile and flexible. Don’t let your plans hold you hostage to any situation.

    2. Spend more time making consumer centric decisions. Always ask “what will the consumer see as a result of the work I am doing?”- and if the answer is nothing, then either fine tune what you are doing, or drop it completely.

    3. Data is in abundance these days. First task: get used to it, and second task: make it relevant to a decision. If a set of data is not helping you make any decision, it is not worth having.

    4. Being relevant to consumers is one of the most difficult things to do these days. If you find a good way of doing it, stick to it. If you can’t, don’t waste your time being irrelevant.

    5. You can’t learn to be a swimmer by jogging at the beach. If you want learning, you have to dip your toes. Start learning by doing – in some cases in today’s world, it is the only way to learn.

  • Avoid Social Vomit; Says Leo Burnett’s Social Media Director

Avoid Social Vomit; Says Leo Burnett’s Social Media Director

Ahmed Adly, Social Media Director at Leo Burnett, is one of the keynote speakers at the Marketing Kingdom Cairo, Egypt’s first-ever international marketing event, taking place from 25-26 October 2015 InterContinental Citystars Hotel in Cairo.

Ahmed is speaking on Day Two of the event on “The Rise Of Influencers,” a topic becoming increasingly important and provocative in today’s social media world.

We recently sat down with him and asked him to give us his 5 tips for marketers in today’s ever-changing marketing world.

    1. Avoid Social Vomit

Do not talk to your audience, but rather talk with them and remember that it’s not about you; it’s about them.

    2. Always assume people are not waiting for your brand message.

So when your message interrupts their day and appears on their feeds, it better be worth it (Informative. rewarding. entertaining. relatable)

    3. Nothing is more effective than using the right influencer

For the right product; people listen to other people; the digital space is now running on crowdsourced decisions (people ask other people for their opinions on the smallest matters and the biggest)

    4. Reward your brand advocates

Those who talk positively about your brand without compensation and on their own accord are your most valuable assets. the number 1 driver of social activities is validation; in fact, that’s what the entire social ecosystem is built on (Likes, RTs, Hearts, favorites. etc.)

    5. The best model of influencer strategy is built on mutual benefit.

The most effective compensation for an influencer is not money, but experience (Travel, exclusive access to products/services/events, etc.) elevates them in their social status, and they will elevate your brand.

Laith Abu Joda Sparks Happiness at Social Media Day Egypt

The Palestinian singer Laith Abu Joda sparked happiness this year at Social Media Day Egypt, which took place in the Greek Campus in downtown Cairo.

Laith Abu Joda Trending in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, & Jordan

SMDay Egypt has been able to reserve 2 spots on Twitter trending topics in the last 48 hours, the first time was on the first day as almost 1500 persons from Egypt were talking about the event’s kick-off, and the second time was when Laith Abu Joda arrived in the event. Laith fans created a special hashtag #LaithinSMDayEgypt which became a trending topic in Egypt for almost an hour and appeared on Saudi Arabia & Jordan trends lists.

Laith Abu Joda VS Famous Brands in Egypt

Anyone who attended the social media day this year can tell you that he/she was annoyed by the big brands’ speakers who didn’t show up and canceled their talks at the last minute, such as Etisalat, Nola Cup Cake, and others. This kind of irresponsibility tells you how unprofessional these brands are and also tells you how Laith Abu Joda deserves his fans’ love; he respected his fans and was responsible for the commitment he made. This is how brands should act.

Mary Jo Jacobi, Corporate Board Director, Strategist and Broadcast Commentator

    • Reputation is the sum of the opinions about an organization or individual.
    • You build a brand by saying the right things. You build a reputation by doing the right things.
    • You have 7 seconds to make a first and lasting impression.
    • Leaders must always exceed expectations. Every encounter is an opportunity to deliver on their expectations. Reputation=Experience – Expectations
    • Leaders should avoid jargon.
    • Engage employees; they are are the most powerful ambassadors for your brands. Empower employees with the right things to say.
    • CEOs and senior executives are brands.
    • An individual brand can be a liability as well as an asset.
    • Sustainability is the key to long-term success.

Piers Schreiber, VP Corporate Communications, Jumeirah, UAE

    • Define your key messages, but if they don’t resonate with the outside world, you fail.
    • All of our social media activities are meant to drive traffic to our website to understand our customers’ activities.
    • Use images to engage people.
    • Bring out the inner storyteller.
    • The more time you put into simplifying the story, the more effective your communication will be.
    • The word art is significant. A lot of companies will use art to communicate with local communities.
    • Our core values are about personalization and excellence.

Sara Walker Kerr, Regional Director of Public Relations MEA, The Ritz Carlton Hotel Company LLC, UAE

    • Social media is a great amplifier, but it’s not the single electric guitar and not the broken one. An additional group of speakers in the back row pumps up the volume and sends out the message that has already been broadcast. It’s all about integration.

Donald Steel, Former Chief Communications Advisor, BBC and Global Expert on Crisis Communication, UK

    • When making the first statement about a crisis, don’t give too much info; don’t make any overstatements; show sympathy for the victims but don’t claim responsibility.
    • All crises are predictable. Nothing can happen to you, your company, or the country that you can’t predict.
    • Prepare a list of all that can happen to your company and a list of what you can say to avoid lagging at times of crisis due to a long list of approvals. Statements often come very late because so many approvals have to be given.
    • If you have pre-prepared statements, you will always be in control.
    • Language tips: always say that your priority is the safety and welfare of the public. The feeling statement is about your values.

5 Rules for a Crisis Statement:

    1. Tell the truth
    2. Use statements to take control.
    3. Act quickly – issue first statement and social media statement within 15 minutes of the crisis
    4. What you say remains the most important, but using all channels to say it is now vital.
    5. The “2Fs” rule in a crisis statement: Fact and Feeling
    • If you don’t feel that you can react in 15 minutes, you will give your reputation away.
    • Don’t promote yourself in times of crisis.
    • Promise to update people/media with information. If you don’t give them timely information, they’ll think you know something, and you’re hiding it.
    • You are much better to break your own news than to have CNN and BBC break it for you. Take control of your own narrative.
    • Always give out your message at the beginning of the interview (e.g., we are sorry for the loss…etc. Because you may never get the chance to say it later in an aggressive interview)
    • Don’t answer stupid questions like: Are you going to resign? Divert the conversation and say, for example: ‘we will take full responsibility; the families are our priority at the moment.’
    • Don’t create your hashtag; wait for people to create it because it looks a bit too promotional.
    • The interview is not over until the reporters are outside the room and miles away.

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments.
