E7gezly and PassApp to become two separate companies

A15, the leading technology investor has announced that E7gezly, the online booking provider, and  PassApp the digital mobile passes solution will be split into two separate companies with A15 taking full ownership of E7gezly and PassApp ownership going fully to its founder Hany El Boraie.

El Boraie has exited E7gezly to A15, to focus his time and dedication to PassApp as a separate company and not as a product within E7gezly. In its press release today, Fadi Antaki, A15’s CEO said that while Hany has been an important cornerstone of the success of E7gezly, A15 respects his decision to focus more on PassApp and to spin it out as its own company. “We are excited about Hany’s decision to focus on PassApp and we believe that under his leadership and with his vision, it will be a hit very soon, and we are looking forward to the possibility of investing in PassApp in the near future,” added Antaki.

Hany El Boraie, commented on the exit and said, “Our journey with A15 has been a very exciting. We highly respect & believe in Fady Younan’s, E7gezly’s new CEO, ability to continue to drive E7gezly’s growth and execute its strategy for becoming a leading digital provider in the industry. We hope E7gezly’s future continues to be exceptional and we wish the E7gezly team the very best in the next phase of their growth.”

Tamer Azer, A15’s Investment and Venture Development Director added, “While A15 and E7gezly have been working together for many years and created a great deal of value together, the market has changed significantly recently and both Hany and A15’s senior management team felt that the separation of the companies will allow both entities to raise funding independently under more flexible venture capital type investment models,” added Azer.

E7gezly will have new management under the direction of its new CEO, Fady Younan. “A15’s management team is excited about Fady’s leadership of E7gezly and sees him as the right person to lead the company through its next phase of growth. He has a clear vision on how to execute the leap to take E7gezly to the next stage and we feel confident in his ability to lead E7gezly to its natural place among digital innovators in the industry,” said Antaki.

Younan Added that E7gezly would like to thank Hany for everything he has done for E7gezly, and wish him the greatest of success in his new endeavor. “We are very excited for our coming steps with our team and partners to realize our vision in providing world-class products & services and becoming a leading player in the ticketing industry” Added E7gezly’s new CEO.

E7gezly was founded in 2012; and provides a seamless booking solution for event organizers and venues.

It’s always the right decision to create a list of current and potential investors regardless of your startup’s life-cycle and whether you currently need to raise money or not? Because this can help you easily identify the right candidates for your company, for example if you have a media production company it will help you connect with investors who are interested in this particular sector. Also, it will make it easier for you to remember which investor to shoot for when you are asking for a specific advice/favor.

    2. List of Partners

We all attend a handful of networking events on a weekly basis and get to meet so many amazing entrepreneurs working on different ideas in diverse sectors and we might just bump into the perfect partner for a future campaign or project. Keeping all these contacts in a separate partners’ list will definitely make connecting with the right companies/institutions a piece of cake whether you are looking for strategic, community or media partners.

  • 6 Personalities of Successful Founders

    6 Personalities of Successful Founders

What makes a successful founder? Many in the startup ecosystem have stepped in to answer this question, which is constantly being asked by founders and — not so publicly — by other VCs. A few days ago, Dave McClure just answered a similar question here (disclosure: 500 Startups is an investor in our startup, Aingel.ai)

Given what Aingel does with predicting startup success based on founder attributes, and considering that “What makes founders successful?” is the number one question we’ve been asked by every VC we meet, we decided to share some of our findings here.

We analyzed the digital footprint of more than 3,600 founders and used AI to transform this data into 50 personality attributes. One of the most interesting discoveries we made was that — contrary to popular conceptions — startup founders’ single traits could not conclusively be linked to their success. However, when you start to pair personality traits, the ability to predict success changes quite dramatically.

Out of many pairs of traits, here are six that tell a strong, instantly recognizable story of personalities of successful founders.

Type 1: Slow to Trust and Very Altruistic

Founders of this type appear shrewd and skeptical, and are less likely to take people — or even data — at their word. However, while they may require concrete evidence to make that initial buy in, they also are concerned about other people, and take the time to help when others are in need.

Hypothesis: In building their startup, these founders are constantly getting feedback from employees and customers, looking at data and hearing a variety of often conflicting opinions, while also supporting and providing a positive environment for employees and customers. Alone, the traits can be a recipe for disaster. We believe that when paired together, these traits are beneficial because they balance each other out. These founders don’t take anything at face value, and their efforts to be truly helpful to others keeps them well informed of different perspectives, while growing a supportive, trusting following.

Type 2: Achievement Seeking with High Self-Awareness

These are founders who have the drive to keep pushing towards success and are motivated to give maximum effort. They also possess high degrees of self-awareness and emotionality. They are able to experience both their own and others’ emotions at a profound level. They also tend to be very good at expressing their emotions. In our research, Scott Dorsey (ExactTarget) ended up in this group.

Hypothesis: When combined, this pair of traits is beneficial because launching a successful company requires continued determination over time that is tempered with an ability to reach out and connect with people. Sometimes, individuals that are achievement-oriented can be seen as overwhelming, single mindedly focused only on results. But achievement-seeking founders who also possess high emotionality are able to experience and project their emotions, allowing them to communicate on a deeper level the benefits of achieving the best possible outcomes, and maintain a high level of support as they drive toward their goals.

Type 3: Highly Empathic but Not Agreeable

Founders of this type tend to be disagreeable but are skilled at monitoring and reacting to the feelings of others. In other words, they stand up for what they believe in and are adept at discerning what others are thinking, which allows them to either bring dissenters to their own point of view or simply disagree without alienating themselves. In our research, Amr Awadallah (Cloudera), landed in this group as a good example of one such founder.

Hypothesis: We’ve found this to be a winning trait pair because individuals who are less agreeable are often considered aggressive or hostile, which can drive employees, customers or even investors in the opposite direction. Being high in both traits allows these founders to be assertive while maintaining positive and productive relationships. They are skilled at reading emotions and beliefs in others, and are more adept at managing the push-pull aspect of working in a business environment.

Type 4: Highly Anxious but Low on Immoderation

Founders of this type are very anxious but focused on long term results and consequences. Short-term gains are secondary when not in line with the big picture. They seem to channel their anxiety and fear of failure towards a longer term goal.

Hypothesis: This seems to tie in with the concept of “healthy paranoia” we’ve heard about many times before. Alone, it can lead founders to take short cuts that can hurt them and the startup in the long run. Coupling anxiety with the focus on the long run seems logical and absolutely necessary for enduring success. Constantly thinking about long term market changes, internal operations or competitive positioning are bound to prepare founders for the future of their startups.

Type 5: Very Moody but Slow to Anger

Founders of this type tend to react easily to life’s ups and downs. They readily experience a range of emotion, with the exception of anger. This moodiness includes positive emotions such as joy and excitement, as well as negative emotions such as sadness. They do not display any forms of anger with their negative emotions.

Hypothesis: Expressing and communicating emotions, such as joy, excitement, and even sorrow leads to a deeper connection with employees. It can be a source of inspiration and drive for their teams. Founders with expressive personalities that are reactive to the world around them, while maintaining control over their anger, can build stronger, more durable connections.

Type 6: Highly Imaginative and Empathic

These founders possess high levels of both imagination as well as empathy. Their imaginative minds lead to creativity and innovation, which are skills of immense importance to the founder, while their empathetic nature gives them invaluable perspective. In our research, Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn) ended up in this group, and you can easily see these traits present in the way he speaks about industries in years to come.

Hypothesis: Founders with only empathy tend to simply focus on solving for the short-term needs. Yet when coupled with a strong imagination, this pair of traits becomes a keenly effective combo to founders because they can easily read where their business or industry is heading and position their startup for success based on the reality that many others do not necessarily see. Creativity and a deep understanding of their customers and industry also means that they tend to outpace their competition on product features and roadmap.

Successful founders come in different shapes and forms. We know from our work at Aingel.ai that you can’t predict a startup’s success on individual traits of a founder. But when we begin to pair those traits, we start to see how they work together and complement one another to bolster a founder toward startup success. If there is enough interest, we will work on some helpful tips on how both investors and employees should handle working with these types of founders.

  • Egyptian E-waste Recycling Company Looks Forward To Be The Next Umicore

Egyptian E-waste Recycling Company Looks Forward To Be The Next Umicore

Electronic waste (E-waste) is the fastest growing waste stream among solid waste worldwide. Also, 50 million tons is generated every year, with only 13 percent recycled. The rest are mostly disposed in landfills.

Reports from the United Nations (UN) predict this number to reach 65 million tons by 2017.

Recycling E-waste holds two advantages: the first is the typical advantage of protecting the environment from the danger of landfills and incinerators; the second is the extraction of valuable minerals.

A report issued in 2014 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that recycling 1 million smartphones produces 9,000 Kg from copper, 250 kg of silver, 24 kg of gold and 9 kg of Palladium.

If, however, this waste stream continues to grow at this rate, then by 2020 we will have a market of $50 billion of disposable E-waste.

    Egyptian Entrepreneur Hacks E-waste Recycling

At a time where the Egyptian economy is facing several crises after the Egyptian pound dropped to a record low against the U.S. Dollar, the courage and hard work of visionary youth are the most needed.

Essam Hashim, a serial entrepreneur, recognized the dire necessity of having an E-waste recycling technology that would boost local recycling industries and, on a larger scale, help the economy by producing valuable metals and reducing the need for importing them.

Now, Essam has launched his own e-waste cost efficient shredder in Egypt and is preparing to launch it in Emirates as well. These steps comes after one month of Dr. WEEE launch, as a mobile app for the android users, for e-waste collection, so that he is closing the loop.

Meanwhile, he is looking forward to get franchisees for the African and the Indian markets, given that he has already signed his first franchising contract with an Indian business man.

“I’m working on developing a technology that can dismantle and shred E-waste and then let them pre-processed locally through our machines for recycling and metal extraction”, says Hashim.

About 3 years ago I went to Europe, and visited more than 40 factories,” Hashim said. “I benefitted a lot from the technology there. I’m really done with that now and I’m launching my company in Cairo and Alexandria, and in Emirates the next three months, then will enter the Indian market as it’s the biggest worldwide know in terms of e-waste opportunities.” he said.

It’s worth to mention, that Dr. WEEE has launched a pilot last May, within some International universities and schools to test the app, prove concept and create awareness about the brand and the culture.

In order to have his strategies materialized, Hashim approached governmental entities and others from the private sectors with the offer of partnerships. He refused to disclose the nature of these partnerships, simply saying that “My fieldwork is largely supported by environmental and industrial entities of the government of Egypt, which had begun to consider local  E-waste recycling more seriously.”

    Who is Dr. WEEE?

In order to create an interaction with electronic consumers in Egypt, Hashim created the cartoon character Dr WEEE, as a symbol of the E-waste collection. WEEE is an abbreviation of the term Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment. These include phones, laptops, computers, chargers, batteries, screens and pads.

Dr. WEEE is supposed to be launched through a web app that allows users to register for a garbage picking service. Every company partnering with Dr. WEEE will receive an E-waste collection box with its own brand printed.

Hashim’s team of developers made sure the user experience of the whole process was smooth, composed of only three steps: registration, command and confirmation (of picking up E-waste). Users also get redeemable points once they start contributing E-waste.  The prizes won will be from electronic stores.

Also, the waste collection will be done by private cars, which “will help create opportunities for those looking for an extra source of income,  as well as opportunities for those working in the factories, and finally; serving environmental and governmental economic causes,” said Hashim.

Hashim did not receive any local or regional investments yet, as he is relying on a self fund, which has so far cost him more than 2 million GDP (almost $115,000) through research and developing the hardware , the app and the market studies of Egypt, Africa and the rest of the region.

“I did not and won’t pursue the chance for investments before proving the practical value of my project,” he said. “I’d rather wait so my focus doesn’t shift to attracting investors.”

    Aggressive Marketing and global attempts

Hashim’s marketing strategies include Facebook advertising, hands-on campaigns for awareness and advertising, and appearing on TV programs that host technology and economical topics in local Egypt.

At the same time, Hashim is partnering right now with an Emirati company that allows him to collect E-waste in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman and Al Sharjah. This partnership is the precedent of a huge factory that would take on the responsibility of recycling Emirates’ E-waste.

Hashim attributes his ability to penetrate the Emirati market to a number of degrees that he had obtained throughout his journey. These include a degree in managing E-waste from the United Nation of Nairobi, as well as a degree in archaeological assessment from Egypt.

Hashim aspires for the globalization of the E-waste recycling technology the he had been building; he aspires for that to happen through the Franchise way, so that an Eco business model would have four pillars, including collecting waste for recycling, selling them to the benefit of others, and extracting metals from the recycling process.

What really helps Hashim with his vision, the fact that he is a second-time entrepreneur, Essam has launched Spearink in 2006, as an e-waste cartridges remanufacturing company that operates on a franchise model, providing the machines and training on how to refill refurbished cartridges.

Based on these givens, shall we expect that Dr. WEEE will make it worldwide and be the next Umicore in the Arab region?

A15 & DELL EMC Join Forces to Support Tech Startups in Egypt

The leading technology investor, A15 announced today a strategic partnership with Dell EMC, the global information infrastructure vendor, with a mission of supporting Egypt’s tech startups.

According to the Egypt National Report for 2015/16, published by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), access to finance has been consistently identified as the major challenge facing Egyptian entrepreneurs.

Egypt’s score in entrepreneurship finance is 3.5 – ranking 49th– compared to a global average of 4.2. This restricts the ability of startups to acquire essential resources – especially access to talent and high-end advisory & mentorship as well as premium technology.

The partnership between A15 and Dell EMC provides A15 portfolio companies with much needed technology, mentorship, talent recruitment support as well as access to the world class pivotal tracker software among other things through its freshly minted SUDO program.

The partnership aims to support technology and technology-enabled startups by providing tools and technical expertise from Dell EMC to A15 startups. This collaboration will add an enormous amount of value to A15 portfolio companies by exposing their young teams to the experience and wealth of knowledge of Dell EMC teams. Moreover, it will give them access to the much needed infrastructure and enable their teams to further develop their knowledge and skills.

In a country that still suffers from slow growth and high unemployment rates, Egyptian youth found their calling in creating products and starting new companies; inspired by similar startup scenes globally.

Magued Mahmoud, Dell EMC Vice President and General Manager of the Center of Excellence in Cairo said “We believe that entrepreneurship will help boost the country’s economy, and it’s our duty to help entrepreneurs by sharing our knowledge and our leading edge technologies with them, and giving them as much support as we can.”

“Joining forces with A15 fits our core values; like us, they are an organization that believes in entrepreneurs and the power of entrepreneurship and the importance of innovation to growth; together we can help offer startups and entrepreneurs more than just funding.” Added Ahmed Osama, Innovation Program Manager at Dell EMC.

“A15’s goal is to provide startups with more than just financial support. We aim to empower them with the knowledge and resources they need to thrive and grow both regionally and globally. A15 is currently building its venture development program that is meant to support startups across three key pillars: Hands-on advisory support across key business functions such as accounting and legal, a bootcamp that institutionalizes knowledge sharing and business development between large portfolio companies and startups within A15’s portfolio and a strong network of strategic partners.” said Fadi Antaki, A15’s CEO.

“And we see Dell EMC as a key strategic partner that can help us deliver on that goal, we are aligned on both mission and vision. These are critical components in what we believe is an important partnership that can add value not just to A15 portfolio companies, but to the entrepreneurship ecosystem at large” Added Antaki.

  • ‘Bosta’ shines on the delivery service scene in Egypt

‘Bosta’ shines on the delivery service scene in Egypt

Believing that on-time delivery is an essential part of the long supply chain of any business, the inspirational entrepreneur Mohammed Ezzat said that it is high time for his Bosta app to rock the market.

    What’s Bosta?

The word Bosta is an Arabic word for mailbox. Digging deep into the main purpose behind launching the app in Egypt, CEO Ezzat seems to have a lot to say.

Bosta service allows users (businesses and individuals) to send and receive packages less than 10 kilograms with a push of a button through a mobile app or a web app in a time that does not exceed two hours, user can also monitor their deliveries real time and even communicate with the courier all over the way.

Ezzat’s passion for enhancing the service of delivery came after his long experience in operation management where he faced many challenges.

“Many large companies are losing their clients’ trust because they have a bad delivery experience or clients experience delays,” Ezzat said, “noting that it is high time to use technology and shorten the period of delivery.”

In an interview with Digital Boom, Ezzat said that he decided to quit ex-booming start-up Lynks and kick-start a new application in the Egyptian market.

Ezzat was a former founder and Chief Operation Officer (COO) of the online shopping website Lynks which allows Egyptian customers to do shopping from any online store in the US.

Bosta team won a trip to Silicon Valley
Bosta team won a trip to Silicon Valley / Riseup summit 2016

    Empowering Egyptian youth

Ezzat said that he aims to create new job opportunities in a country with unemployment rates exceeding 12 percent. “It is the main role of entrepreneurs to create jobs for the country and empower youth to do services via tech-enabled projects,” he added.

Bosta app is providing out-of-the-box solution to the delivery service as it delivers items via scooters that are mainly owned by the “stars” or the deliverymen.

The project does not own scooters

Ahmed Gaber, Bosta COO said that the start-up is relying on scooters to offer its service as many people are able to buy a brand new scooter at a cost of 15,000 Egyptian pounds, which is affordable to people from the middle class willing to start their own businesses.

The current team is currently operating to serve companies and businesses, Gaber said, adding that Bosta is now working with 100 companies.

    What are the main challenges?

Asking founder Ezzat about the main challenges, he noted that his instant delivery app has rocked the market, which was long monopolized by large international companies worldwide.

Such companies, he added, have been taking the lion’s share of the market because of their long presence with no competitors.

Keen on putting an edge to the service, one of the “stars” or the deliverymen told Digital Boom that they are always using Google maps to help them avoid crowded areas in the capital and reach on time.

Alaa Osama, a 22-year-old student at the Faculty of Engineering, said that the app is a perfect opportunity to engage many young people who own scooters in the Bosta service.

He added that prices of scooters are affordable for many young people as they range from LE15, 000 to LE18,000. In addition, it is one of the perfect means that help overcome the traffic jam.

Osama noted that it is a perfect business model, because it allows users to pick the time they want to receive instant requests via the app.

The two main challenges Osama and his teammates are trying to overcome are:

    • Lack of fuel on high ways
    • The mobile phone running of battery

For founder Ezzat, the entrepreneurship is Egypt is booming. However, he said that there is a dire need to amend investment laws to encourage investors to pump their money into successful ideas.

  • El3ab.com unleashes its new portal, receives EGP 2M investment from A15

El3ab.com unleashes its new portal, receives EGP 2M investment from A15

El3ab, Egypt’s classic gaming hub, relaunches its portal with more games and with its first ever app based game “Estimation Kings,” with investment from A15, to reconnect with its loyal fan base.

Since its birth, El3ab grew rapidly to become the region’s leading gaming hub thanks to a base of highly engaged and loyal gamers. Yet, as the market changed, El3ab did not manage to keep pace with competitors who catered to increasingly more sophisticated gamers. The flash games El3ab relied on were no longer sufficient to keep El3ab’s fan base engaged. This lack of innovation cost El3ab dearly.

To help El3ab regain its position as the Middle East’s gaming hub, the team had to step-up their game; they upgraded the portal and all the portal’s games to HTML5 and partnered with other renowned gaming hubs and featured their games on the portal as well as a way to offer their fan base more options. “The goal is to re-engage El3ab’s loyal fan base and attract new ones with a look and feel that is not just hip and friendly, but also more diverse.” Said Assem Emam, El3ab’s General Manager.

When A15, the leading technology investor, first started working with El3ab, the team quickly realized the vast potential of El3ab and committed to updating the portal and its games to adapt to the latest technology. “El3ab is a potential sleeping giant and it’s high time we [A15] gave it some attention and gave its loyal customers the quality experience they deserve.” Said Tamer Azer, A15’s Investment and Venture Development Director. “A15 will support El3ab’s new team both through a direct 2M EGP investment and through our venture development arm and help it grow through our network of portfolio companies that have 16 offices across the MENA region.” Added Tamer.

Alongside its relaunch of the portal, El3ab’s team wanted to launch its first app based game to further re-engage their loyal fan base and they believed that Estimation would be their best bet to make that happen. “This decision was based on what research told us people in the region and abroad wanted and El3ab’s long history of card gaming experience.” Said Assem Emam. Despite the game’s huge popularity among millions of youth, game developers ignored releasing a high quality version with specs to cater to today’s youth. And that is precisely why El3ab decided to introduce the all new “Estimation Kings.”

“Estimation Kings” is El3ab’s first new release that operates on all devices using different operating systems. The game is similar to some renowned card games such as Spade and Jacks yet with more challenge built into it. We believe that Estimation kings will jumpstart the market with its state of the art user experience. It is El3ab’s first child that has received due care and attention in its upbringing.

It is projected that the revenues generated by the gaming industry in the MENA region will reach $3.2 billion in 2016 compared to over $70 billion globally, according to Lebanon’s Telecommunications Minister Boutros Harb.
