Vivaldi introduces vertical reader mode, a first for browsers

Vivaldi has launched version 1.14, celebrating its third anniversary since the browser’s first public technical preview. With this update, Vivaldi becomes the first browser to introduce a vertical reader mode. This version also includes Markdown support for Notes, rearrangeable Web Panels, and the ability to reorder search engines.

Founded by the founder of Opera Software, Jon von Tetzchner, the vivaldi.com browser allows you to do things your way online.

    Vertical reader mode

The Vivaldi browser is the first browser to support a vertical Reader View. This feature reflects the priority on users’ individual needs that have driven innovation at Vivaldi over the last three years.

With Vivaldi’s Reader View, users can access content and enjoy a clutter-free reading environment. They can change the font, adjust the line height, column width, and switch to the dark or light background while in Reader View.

With the introduction of vertical reader mode in this release, Vivaldi caters to users of Chinese (simplified and traditional), Japanese and Korean languages. A vertical display is one of the default ways to view the written text in these languages. Users can now read texts in these languages comfortably with no distracting page elements. They can choose their reading preference by accessing Webpages in the Settings and clicking on vertical text direction.

“The needs of our users come first, no matter where they live or what language they read, write, or speak. The vertical reader mode gives them more flexibility to access content on the Web on their terms,” says Jon von Tetzchner. “We are confident that with this unique feature, users of the East Asian languages all across the globe will have yet another reason to choose Vivaldi.”

    Markdown support to Notes

With each release, Vivaldi improves its differentiating features without relying on add-ons. Notes are among the most popular features, along with Tabs Stacks, Tab Tiling, and an extensive History function. Users can create notes in the browser’s sidebar, annotating websites and attaching screenshots while they browse.

In 1.14, the note-taking feature gets an upgrade with Markdown support, a natural and intuitive way of applying to format used by many sites, including GitHub and Reddit.

Users can now add formatting like headers, bolding and bulleted lists to their notes while surfing the web. This is a great way to organize notes, compose emails, to-do lists, and more. In addition to markdown formatting, they can also use this option to preview simple HTML.

Markdown support is useful from a productivity standpoint because it helps users –  particularly bloggers, journalists, and researchers – to quickly and instantly format text. With this addition, users can use Notes to write longer emails, novels, and pretty much all other types of text documents.

    Rearrangeable Web Panels

Taking cues from its community and improving the existing features have been a focal point of Vivaldi. One of Vivaldi’s signature features, Web Panels, has been greatly improved.

With Web Panels, individual websites can be added to Vivaldi’s side panels to browse alongside the main browser window. It is a great way of quickly browsing social media or news sites without switching tabs. Users can even adjust widths for different web panels, which gives them greater flexibility over how the content is presented.

In version 1.14, users now get the ability to reorganize and customize the Web Panels’ position in the sidebar of the browser. They can prioritize their choice of web pages on the fly to make their browsing even more interactive and convenient.

    Reorder search engines

Vivaldi puts its users in full control to search the web the way they like. They can set their default search engine or select various alternatives such as the privacy-friendly DuckDuckGo and eco-conscious Ecosia. A new search engine can even be added instantly with a right-click, improving workflow and efficiency.

The latest version brings in a highly requested option to Vivaldi’s search functionality, adding more flexibility. Many users have requested the ability to rearrange their search engines.

With the new list layout, they can drag-n-drop (or use their keyboard) search engines in the order they want, with ease.

“Over the last three years, Vivaldi has introduced a series of novel features and customization options that keep our users productive, inspired, and engaged on the Web,” says Jon von Tetzchner. “We are trying to capture our users’ imaginations and focus on giving them multiple ways of accessing their favorite features so that they can browse exactly the way they want to.”

WUZZUF crowns winners of Egypt’s first programming competition

15 winners were crowned at Egypt’s first programming competition “A2OJ’s Code Battle”, organized by WUZZUF.com on Saturday, Oct 28 at the Golden Tulip Flamenco Hotel in Cairo.

More than 40 contestants battled for the crown of Egypt’s algorithmic throne, which after three long hours of coding was finally claimed by Mohamed Yasser: Egypt’s code champion. Second, third, fourth and fifth place went to Ahmad El-Sagheer, Amr Magdy, Ahmed Kamel and Mohamed Omar respectively.

“We were amazed by how many young programmers joined Code Battle and did really well, it’s clear to see  that Egypt’s tech future is bright and beaming,” said WUZZUF marketing programs manager Dina Khedr Saturday as the winners were announced.

In addition to the top five champions, the youngest, top female and top regional contestants were crowned at the event, which was attended by a number of tech industry leaders who got the chance to connect with the finalists.

More about Egypt’s first programming competition

WUZZUF and A2OJ set out to hunt the one coder who is worthy of the title of Egypt’s best coder. That’s why Code Battle presented the perfect opportunity for all Egyptian coders who are passionate about programming to prove they’re the best.

3,000 talented Egyptian programmers joined the competition on October 9. After two online rounds, 150 Code Battlers made it to the on-site Semi-Final, which was composed of three regional events that were held last Wednesday (October 25) at the Greek Campus in Cairo, the Workstation Coworking Space in Alexandria and Silicon Waha at We Park in Assiut.

The competition was composed of a series of smart, challenging programming puzzles that contestants solved on the A2OJ website. Through these programming problems, which were similar to the ones used by Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft to recruit developers all around the world, Code Battle tested contestants’ problem-solving, algorithmic and data structuring skills.

With Egypt’s first programming competition, WUZZUF and A2OJ were not only aiming to build and strengthen an interactive and comprehensive Egyptian programming community and encourage Egyptian coders to pursue their passion, they were also paving the way for a brighter, smarter, and tech-savvier future in Egypt.

  • A look into Apple’s iPhone X Marketing Strategies

A look into Apple’s iPhone X Marketing Strategies

The tech baron announced three new iPhones and an Apple watch. As though that was not enough to draw attention, the company employed advertising techniques that have not been used before in smartphones.

    The iPhone X ads

The iPhone X ad has taken the internet by storm. The ad is a fusion of so many elements; showcasing the phone’s features that appeal to current users while at the same time maintaining delivering sleek graphics that captivate current audiences.

A lot of strategies are manifested in the 38-second video, as well as the longer video that showcases its features.

The short, colorful liquid video is in many ways similar to the videos that are currently trending on Instagram and even being used by musicians as background shots in music videos and concerts. The long video focuses on the specific features such as facial recognition and live modifiable emojis that would interest the young population which forms a bulk of its customer base.

    Meet iPhone X’ Campaign

Though not a totally new concept, this video takes the crown. The 1min 38sec video brings the device to life with the various shots of guys making emojis dance to Sofi Tukker’s Best Friend’ soundtrack. There’s no better way of showcasing a product than showing it in use. This is a principle Apple fulfilled in the video.

    Transcending age, races and ethnicities

This is another big selling point of the ads. There is no single race or ethnicity that is overrepresented in the iPhone X ad. People from across all continents feature in it, giving the brand a global look. This may, in fact, be the reason why the video is trending in almost all countries, despite iPhones being less popular in most of them.

    The Dear Apple’s campaign

Though this is an Apple watch ad, I just have to mention it because it has played a great part in the overall success of this week’s Apple campaign. The use of testimonials of satisfied users to market makes customers identify with the product. Unlike the celebrity endorsement and expert opinions approaches used by many advertisers, this man-on-the-street technique showcased how the product impacted on various users lives. For sure, this is hands down one of the best marketing technique employed by the company.

Despite the ups and downs faced by Apple, the company never seizes to amaze when it comes to marketing. The ability to announce three new products and still manage to draw attention to each single device attests to the company’s advertising muscle. One could argue that the drastic move by the company called for equally moving ads, but we still have to hand it to them this time. We could definitely learn a thing or two from this.
